A pair of running shoes ready to be sized

Buying shoes online is convenient, but it only works if you order the right size. A pair that is half a size too small causes blisters, and one that is too big slips at the heel. This guide shows you how to find your shoe size at home so you can order with confidence.

Measure your foot at home

Measure in the evening, when your feet are at their largest after a day of walking. You only need a sheet of paper, a pen and a ruler.

  1. Place the paper against a wall and stand on it with your heel touching the wall.
  2. Mark the tip of your longest toe.
  3. Measure from the edge of the paper to the mark, in centimetres.
  4. Repeat with the other foot and use the larger number.

Most people have one foot slightly bigger than the other, so always size for the bigger foot.

Convert centimetres to your shoe size

Brands and regions use different systems, so check which one the product page uses. As a rough guide, a foot length of 25 cm is close to a EU 40 or a UK 6. Our product pages list sizes in the system the brand uses, and you can browse sneakers to see the ranges we stock.

Add room for your toes

Leave about 1 cm (roughly a thumb's width) between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. Running shoes often need a little more room than casual shoes because feet swell during a run.

Common shoe size mistakes

  • Measuring in the morning, when feet are smallest.
  • Ignoring width, which matters as much as length.
  • Assuming every brand fits the same way.
  • Buying to match an old pair that has already stretched.

What to do if you are between sizes

If you fall between two sizes, choose the larger one and add a thin insole or thicker socks if it feels loose. It is much easier to make a shoe snugger than to make it longer.
